TMJ – Temporomandibular Joint means Jaw Joint, and the disease affecting this part of your body is called Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, TMD. The underlying cause is a compressed Jaw Joint with both Jaws, upper and lower, too far back. This can be due to breathing problems like mouth breathing, allergies, asthma, accidents, trauma, orthodontics or prosthodontic treatments that usually have altered the bite.
When the lower jaw is too far back, this compresses the ears and nerve tissues in-between of the ears and the Jaw Joint’s head. This trigeminal nerve tissue collects information from the nerves in your teeth, how they come together, and sends faulty signals to your brain, eyes, ears, muscles, and nerves, causing a cascade of symptoms such as headaches, neck aches, blurred vision, tinnitus, migraines and fibromyalgia, amongst others.
Often one or two of the discs in the Jaw Joints is/are displaced, which you will notice by clicking or popping sounds, and deviation of your lower Jaw while opening and closing your mouth. In more severe cases, the mouth opening can be so reduced or limited that the affected person is unable to eat. Other than that the neck is often blocked, and/or affected by Craniocervical Instability, more commonly referred to as whiplash.
This condition not only affects the Jaws, head and neck but also the cervical spine, which will often lose its functional curvatures. Sometimes rotations of the vertebrae can be observed. Patients will experience clenching and grinding of their teeth. All of these symptoms are consequences of the Jaw Joint problem, thus the body implements compensatory mechanisms to keep the vital airway open, and to balance the head on the spine.
There are many treatment options available, of which only very few are able to provide relief. Most of them may induce further harm, so you would have to acquire lots of knowledge before choosing. Patients usually lack knowledge, so doctor hopping is commonly seen. It is not unusual for a TMD patient to have visited dozens of doctors and paid 10s of 1000s of dollars, only to find that their condition has worsened with each visit and intervention. This causes a lot of financial, physical and psychological damage to the affected persons.
